LEGALITIES IN TASMANIA:
Home Education is a legal option in Tasmania, providing the parent/guardian registers as a home educator. Registration is managed by the Tasmanian Home Education Advisory Council [THEAC] and confirmed by the Minister for Education
THEAC is made up of six members, three of whom are nominated by home educators, and three appointed by the Minister from the wider Tasmanian community.
THEAC provides advice and information to the Minister for Education. This involves the development of procedures and recommended practices relating to the administration and regulation of Home Education in Tasmania.
The Council is responsible for the registration of home educators as per the legislative requirements of the Tasmanian Education Act 1994 and the Youth Participation in Education and Training (Guaranteeing Futures) Act 2005.
The Council represents home educators on matters relating to resources and entitlements that will assist them in providing a quality learning program for their children. It seeks ongoing clarification on a range of benefits for which home-educated children are eligible.
THEAC provides a reference point for queries, responds to community concerns and maintains liaison with other agencies about home education.
