Captain Compost

Updated: Nov 2, 2021

Captain Compost has been using song, dance and drama at the Wollongong Botanic Garden to teach children about the bugs, beetles and creepy crawlies of the compost for years – now he’s going to livestream for the 2021 Global Learning Festival on behalf of Wollongong City Council!

By the end of the event, students will be able to describe nature’s way of recycling and explain the importance of compost in reducing waste in our environment. Captain Compost will engage and entertain your students whilst covering:

  • An introduction to chemistry: the elements of carbon and nitrogen and the ratio needed for composting.

  • The little inhabitants of the compost: bugs, beetles and other creepy crawlies that help to breakdown waste.

At the end, there will be a short Kahoot Quiz that asks questions about Composting – will your class come out on top?!

  1. Register for the event here. You should receive an email confirmation from Microsoft Teams straight away. If you don’t receive an email with the link to join the event, please check your Junk folder. If you need further assistance, please email the event organiser.

  2. Before the event, you will receive an email with a few resources about composting to scaffold learning around the event.

  3. When the event commences, please encourage your students to answer Captain Composts questions even though he won’t really be able to hear them – Captain Compost wants your students to have fun while they are learning. You will be encouraged to communicate with Captain Compost via the Chat function as well. Please note, the identity of your children will be protected as cameras and microphones cannot be turned on.

  4. At the end of the event, there will be a short Kahoot quiz. Please have a device ready so you can submit answers.
