FINDING STRUCTURE, SUPPORT AND A NEW PATH FORWARD

Luke Thomas shares his family’s journey to finding the right learning environment for his son, Finlay.

When our family first chose home-schooling, it was the right decision for us. Like many

families, we were trying to find an approach that would work for our son, Finlay, after a

difficult experience in mainstream education. Finlay is on the autism spectrum and we found

that home-schooling gave us flexibility and some important benefits, but it was also a huge

commitment. Balancing teaching, family life and everything else that comes with being a

parent of an Autistic child was challenging, and over time we realised we needed more

support.

After what felt like a long journey, we enrolled with Aspect Distance Education.

What immediately stood out was the structure and routine it could provide, while still allowing

Finlay to learn from home in an environment where he felt safe and comfortable. Just as

importantly, it gave him opportunities to connect with teachers and other students in ways

that had been difficult for us to create.

That combination has made an enormous difference.

Before enrolling with Aspect, we’d tried a number of different schooling options throughout

Finlay’s primary school years, including both distance education and on-campus schools.

Unfortunately, none of them had quite worked for him. Like many Autistic children, finding

the right educational environment wasn’t straightforward.

When Finlay started with Aspect Distance Education, the structure and routine of the online

program really suited him. It gave him the consistency he needed to build his confidence and

develop important skills at his own pace. As he became more comfortable with the routine,

we started seeing real progress.

The support from the team made a huge difference. Communication has been one of the

biggest strengths of the program. We’ve always known what was happening, we’ve felt

listened to, and we’ve felt like we were working together towards the same goal.

Looking back now, I can honestly say Finlay’s capacity has increased tenfold. The biggest

change has been seeing him successfully transition back into on-campus learning a couple

of days each week.

He’;s much more settled in the school environment now. He’s becoming more social, making

friends and enjoying being part of the school community. Watching that happen has been

incredibly rewarding.

Every family’s journey is different, and there’s no single pathway that’s right for every child.

For us, home-schooling was an important part of Finlay’s education, and Aspect Distance

Education became the next step in that journey. Watching him on youtube
