QUT's New Pathway for Queensland-Based Homeschooled Students

Updated: 6 days ago

Introducing START QUT: A Unique Opportunity

QUT is excited to pilot a new pathway into QUT for Queensland-based homeschooled students who aspire to higher education. This initiative opens doors for students eager to explore their academic potential.

Over the 2025/2026 summer semester and semesters 1 and 2 of 2026, QUT is piloting a pathway for homeschooled students into an undergraduate degree or diploma. This program, known as START QUT, is designed to help students decide on their future course and career options.

What is START QUT?

The START QUT pathway allows students to study up to two first-year units from a wide range of disciplines. Participants will experience university life and attend classes, either on-campus or online, alongside first-year QUT students. This exposure is invaluable for those transitioning from a homeschooling environment to a more structured academic setting.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the START QUT program, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 16 years old when START QUT classes commence.

  • Be registered with the Queensland Department of Education Home Education Unit.

  • Have the approval and support of a parent or guardian.

There are no test requirements, such as minimum SAT or STAT scores for entry. However, students must be capable of undertaking university-level study. This involves dedicating 8-10 hours per week on each START QUT unit, in addition to their homeschooling workload.

Benefits of Completing START QUT

By completing two START QUT units, students will receive a selection rank that may be used to apply for enrolment in a QUT course. Additionally, students may be able to use these two units as advanced standing (credit) towards a related bachelor's degree. This can significantly ease the transition into higher education.

Financial Aspects

START QUT is a scholarship program, meaning there are no tuition fees. Students will only need to cover costs such as textbooks, transport, and printing. This makes it an accessible option for many families.

Application Process

Applications for the 2025/2026 summer semester and semester 1, 2026, will open on 1 August 2025 and close on 31 October 2025. It’s essential to mark these dates on your calendar to ensure you don’t miss out on this opportunity.
