WHAT IS HOMESCHOOLING?

Homeschooling in Australia is on the rise. The latest figures show an estimated 27,000 are homeschooled across the country – a more than 24% increase since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Essentially, homeschooling is parent or guardian-led learning from home that gives parents and teenagers the opportunity to undertake self-paced learning that would otherwise be done in school, usually across a variety of areas such as English, maths, sciences and more. It is recommended parents or guardians homeschooling teens be registered with a relevant state body.

WHY HOMESCHOOL? There are many reasons why more and more parents and guardians are choosing homeschooling in Australia for their teens. Some of the reasons include:

  • More freedom and flexibility

  • Support learning difficulties

  • Religious reasons

  • Curriculum control

  • Geographical location

  • Preferring non-traditional school systems

It’s interesting to see how homeschooling has grown so much in Australia, especially since the pandemic. The flexibility it offers with self-paced learning must be appealing for a lot of families. I imagine it gives students a chance to really dive into their interests and learn at their own speed, which might not always be possible in a traditional school setting.
